and ohio to see what impact the debates may have had. these are states obama carried, all of which in 2008, close to or above 50% and each of them as you look at the numbers to some degree reflecting his approval rating and a general improvement in the right direction, wrong direction numbers that have occurred the last several months. the president has enjoyed an unfavorable positive rating in each state. romney's likability score has been more mix. with the exception of virginia, north carolina and florida, his strongest three states, his likability has been upside-down. that may have changed but we will be in our next round of polls interested to see if the debate has reset the campaign in terms of these numbers. you have heard a lot of -- that was sold. pathways to the 270 alecto world votes and how president obama probably has more pathways to that war easier ways of putting that together because it was built in the. state/read state differences but let me make a couple points on this. if you start with the. states and add florida which is 29 it is that 2 is 66 and would meet any of t

was not brought up for whatever reason in the debate tonight. but obama, president obama has been under fire for their shifting explanation of why an ambassador was killed and what the root cause of that was. they initially said it had to do with silly videotape making fun of muslims. in fact it turns out this is organized effort by terrorists, probably associated with al qaeda. at a complex that didn't have as much security if you look at the reporting as it probably should have. probably not going to be a decisive issue in the campaign but another issue that goes to, was this a successful presidency? is he prosecuting things in a competent way? >> root cause and administration handling of it to note that the vice president told there is only one, and that will cover everything. it will not be just a domestic debate. so everything will be fair game. tonight really increases the stakes for next week's debate. for ryan becomes more incumbent on him to try to keep the momentum going, that mitt romney established tonight. and for biden the question will be can he turn the narrative around once

's going continue to struggle on the front. i think the obama campaign going in to the debates, doesn't the burden here. but probably would, you know, should talk about what the next four years will be like, and i expect that that will happy during the debate. but i said that here. because i'm talking tactically here. the challenger has the burden. we have a history with barack obama. we have a sense what he's done. we have a sense what he's like and what he will do. when you're the challenger, you have to say why you will be cimpt. and obama did that in 2008, and that's the thing that romney is going have -- i think will be need to do. we are evaluating one of the president as the champion, so to speak in boxing terms. we are evaluating one of the challenger. if you don't play the role of the challenge netter minds of people, well, then it's hard to imagine you'll play the role of the champ well. that's my own sort of two cents on that. >> we all know that the words we use are very important. on the campaign that you worked on, how did the candidate choose which keywords or catch pha

. if you look at the debates in 2008 between john mccain and brought obama, with mccain aesop is hobbled war, speaking about a war, no one was talking about it anymore. spoke in the language of the u.s. senate. it is very compliced in a complicated way. then you have this tall and confident man seemed to speak directly and connect with people. and now americans have a choice between those two people. and now we are seeing very much reduced efforts in the office. he has lost the ability to lead if he ever had it. and we have a tendency sometimes in america to took more people before they are ready. and then to make them once they are there, but ultimately, a kind of ruthlessness in regards to their character as well. i think this is going to be a very momentous year and i think this is going to be a year in which next year will be very difficult. and we really need to examine the entitlement state and the nature of the american political level. while we may be war abroad, we are changing things abroad. i think the world is going to look very different. warriors from now than it does toda

state that we thought would be remarkably close at this point are really starting to trend towards obama in a way that every seems to think that unless these debates reset his presidential election, it's quite clear that the president actually headed towards creating an environment where on this map is a significant advantage. >> governor christie promised speedy this is right, met ron is going to be so exceptional tomorrow there'll be a seismic shift. >> let's watch. talk about it next week in class. >> the crossroads different venues also engage in more localized regions, states, congressional and senate. a bit about how you choose your priorities since you have a broader scope than is. >> that's a good question. the goal of american crossroads is to be president obama into electing a president but were also heavily invested in senate and house races. a lot of the other super pacs or not. we are focused on all of the senate races are where you see a lot more of the advertising earlier on just because senate races, people figure, pay more attention earlier. will also engage in number of

in terms of the timing. it was like the two minutes didn't matter. barack obama woods along. when i'm about to die i want barack obama's five seconds because they lasted forever. [laughter] on the other hand, i thought it was pretty good. there's so much policy in this debate. both of these people show they are very smart people and that they both you know can be president, won by virtue of being present in the other by virtue of -- i don't know if there are differences in the formats in the next two. i haven't looked that far ahead. but, i thought it worked out really well in terms of the back-and-forth. it was more of a gnat -- actual debate then a dinner talk or something. >> i think as they political follower like all of you are, i like to the elastic time constraints. i think sometimes in too many debates, i mean just let them talk. i don't think the format of the debate affected the performance of either candidate. it was what it was. i think mr. lehrer did a terrific job and i thought it was neat that they were talking a lot. >> it was more british style than american-style. >> yeah,

the gun. they might not be used to them may not have the same temper his barack obama does and is not fair to jump at them. i remember feeling bad after budget debate -- remember when the government almost shut down? don't worry, it's coming back with the same being every night. they would all get together and talk about whatever and i was getting pretty bored with the whole situation because it was always a tenet night and nothing much doing. i would try to get the best angle and there was no one one in west wing at 10:00 at night. i am in in the roosevelt room trying to get a great shot of speaker of boehner but it wasn't fair to those guys. is kind of startling when they are coming out of around. he doesn't really know who i am and doesn't know exactly what i do and hopping out of cupboards with the camera. for that heels gets it. it is like arun is a scammer but you have to think about how it's impacting other folks because it's kind of a precious thing. this is not set in stone. like i said if there is a president romney i am not sure he will continue the practice and even more so tha
